Experimenting with acoustic mirrors
Come and try out the mirrors created by Master’s students of 2018 for the very largest 3D printer! You’ll experience a physical phenomenon that is deployed on a tiny scale in the labs next door.
Where can I find the acoustic mirrors?
The acoustic mirrors are to be mounted on the grounds of the H?nggerberg campus in the future. Until then, they are temporarily on display in the foyer of the HPH building on the H?nggerberg campus during building opening hours. Due to other uses of the foyer, they are not currently on display. The acoustic mirrors represent the interdisciplinary communication between the departments of architecture and physics, and are a playful symbol of the research underway on campus.
Who is behind the project?
Two ETH Zurich research fields – physics and architecture – joined forces for the acoustic mirrors experiment on the H?nggerberg campus. Two Master’s students in the Department of Architecture, working for the external pageNational Centre of Competence in Research - Digital Fabrication, created the mirrors at the initiative of the Department of Physics, National Centre of Competence in Research – Quantum Science and Technology. The acoustic mirrors, created through a fascinating 3D printing process, demonstrate a well-known physical phenomenon, which is used today in experimental quantum physics to intensify signals.
For the project, the ETH Zurich departments of Architecture and Physics, Services and Real Estate worked together, supported by the department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering, and Empa.
