TeachForward: Bridging Theory to Practice for Doctoral TAs
The series "TeachForward: Bridging Theory to Practice for Doctoral TAs" offers ideas and guidance for alumni of the course "Learning to Teach" and other doctoral students with teaching responsibilities and the possibilities to design their own teaching to test methods and teaching approaches in their teaching, to network with peers and to exchange experiences. We offer different focus topics in a workshop format, which should encourage to exchange with peers and plan an implementation in your own teaching.
Focus Topics
How can science help shape livable futures? Insights into transformative research and teaching
What can science contribute to solving societal challenges and to the socio-ecological transformation of our social structures? How can students and teachers themselves become active for this change? And what might teaching look like that turns students into agents of change?
In this workshop for all those who teach with curiosity and a will and possibility to create, we will provide insights into the basic ideas of a transformative and transdisciplinary science that critically reflects on such questions. In addition to some basic reflections on the social role of science, we will mainly present concrete approaches that are already testing the teaching of the future.
In the workshop there will be space to develop concrete ideas to incorporate transdisciplinary elements into your own course, to implement them in a transfer phase. We will build on the basics of "Learning to Teach" and address how to teach successfully using "real world problems", we will reflect on the principles of teaching and learning as well as formative assessment possibilities such as CATs.
The workshop will be organized by Dr. Marion Lehner (LET - Lehrentwicklung und -technologie ETH) and Judith Meder, Franziska Quo? and Jan Freihardt from external page the association Wissenschaf(f)t Zukünfte e.V., which networks students and young researchers interested in transformative science. Throughout the workshop, we will delve into three essential coaching tools: the art of active listening, the skill of asking impactful questions, and the nuanced approach to providing constructive feedback. Join us in this engaging exploration to enhance your role and make a positive impact on your students' learning journey.

How can AI-based tools revolutionize teaching and learning? What role do students play in this, and how far can they go in using these technologies? What is permitted in an academic context and how can the limits of artificial intelligence be defined in everyday university life?
This workshop is aimed at lecturers who are curious about the possible uses and potential of AI-based tools such as MS Copilot, ChatGPT or gBard and are looking for ways to integrate them responsibly and effectively into their teaching. Together we will explore how lecturers can use AI-based tools in both the preparation and follow-up of courses and discuss different exercise formats with AI support that can be used in the specific subject context.
In this interactive workshop, you will learn through practical examples from everyday teaching how AI-based tools can be used in your own classroom. You will be given an overview of various tools and their application scenarios. At the same time, we will shed light on the current possibilities as well as the limitations that need to be considered when using AI in teaching and learning. The aim is to equip you with the tools to use AI technologies effectively and ethically in your teaching environment.
