The latest honours and prizes

On 20 April 2023, Didier Queloz, Nobel Laureate in Physics 2019 and President of the Marcel Benoist Foundation, was awarded the Insignia of Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour by H.E.M. Fr¨¦d¨¦ric Journ¨¨s, the French Ambassador to Switzerland.

For her doctoral thesis on Ultrastrong light-matter interaction at the nanoscale, Shima Rajabali, receives the Hans-?Eggenberger-Prize. The thesis was done at Quantum Optoelectronics lab of the Professors J¨¦r?me Faist and Giacomo Scalari at the Department of Physics of ETH Zurich.

Tilman Esslinger, professor at the Department of Physics, has been recognised with an Honorary Degree from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The prize is awarded once every two years to young scientists to promote originality and excellence in physics research. The 2020 "Raymond and Beverly Sackler International Prize in Physics" was awarded to researchers within the disciplines of Emergent Phenomena and Functionality in Metamaterials and Heterostructures.

Eugene Demler, quantum researcher and professor at ETH Zurich, was honoured for his theoretical work on quantum fluids and solids, especially for his contributions to the study of ultracold atoms in optical lattices.

This year's Christophe Plantin Prize has been awarded to Dr. Veerle Sterken for her pioneering research into interstellar dust in the solar system.

The American National Academy of Sciences has awarded membership to the three ETH Zurich professors.

The 2021 MERAC of the?European Astronomical Society (EAS) for the Best Early Career Researcher in Theoretical Astrophysics (New Technologies) goes to Judit Szul¨¢gyi, Assistant Professor of Computational Astrophysics at the Institute for Particle Physics and Astrophysics (IPA) at ETH Zurich.

Professor Andreas Wallraff (D-PHYS) receives one of the 2020 Helmholtz International Fellow Awards of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres. The award serves also to expand an existing cooperation with scientists at the Forschungszentrum J¨¹lich (Germany).

Professor Klaus Ensslin (D-PHYS) has been awarded the 2020 Edison Volta Prize of the European Physical Society (EPS), jointly with Dieter Weiss (University of Regensburg) and Jurgen Smet (Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research), "for their seminal contributions to condensed matter nano-science".

Dr. Ileana-Cristina Benea-Chelmus has been awarded the 2019 Hans Eggenberger Prize for groundbreaking research performed in the Quantum Optoelectronics Group of Prof. J¨¦r?me Faist (D-PHYS). The Hans Eggenberger foundation further finances part of her current research at Harvard University, where she is a postdoctoral fellow.

The Optical Society,?the leading global professional association in optics and photonics, awards Prof. Ursula Keller (D-PHYS) its highest honours, the 2020 Frederic Ives Medal/Jarus W. Quinn Prize, in recognition of her fundamental contributions to ultrafast lasers technology.

The International Society for Optics and Photonics, SPIE, awards the 2020 Gold Medal, the highest honour the society bestows, to Ursula Keller, Professor of?Ultrafast Laser Physics at the Department of Physics, for her "career-long pioneering contributions in ultrafast science and technology".

The Director of the National Supercomputing Center CSCS has been honoured for his outstanding achievements in the field of high-performance computing.

The 2019 Julius Springer Prize for Applied Physics will be awarded to ETH physics professor J¨¦r?me Faist, head of the?Quantum Optoelectronics Group at the Institute for Quantum Electronics

The 2019 IEEE Edison Medal will be awarded to ETH physics professor Ursula Keller, head of the Ultrafast Laser Physics Group at the Institute for Quantum Electronics, for her career achievements.

The 2018 IEEE Medal for Environmental and Safety Technologies will be awarded to ETH physics professor J¨¦r?me Faist, head of the?Quantum Optoelectronics Group at the Institute for Quantum Electronics, and to Prof. Frank Tittel of Rice University (US).

Renato Renner, ETH Professor for Theoretical Physics and head of the research group for Quantum Information Theory at the Department of Physics, has won the first ALEA Award of ETH Zurich. The ALEA Award honours leaders who enable advanced and innovative working conditions.

The Charpak¨CRitz Prize 2018, which is jointly awarded by the Swiss Physical Society?and the?French Physical Society, has been awarded to?Roland Horisberger, Professor at the Department of Physics (D-PHYS).

Ursula Keller, Professor at the Institute for Quantum Electronics (D-PHYS), received today one of the two 2017 Weizmann Women & Science Awards "for pioneering and seminal contributions to ultrafast lasers technology and important breakthroughs in attosecond science".

The 2017 MERAC Prize of the?European Astronomical Society for the Best Early Career Researcher in Observational Astrophysics goes to Kevin Schawinski, Professor of the Astrophysics of Galaxies and Black Holes (D-PHYS).

Simon Lilly, Professor of Experimental Astrophysics at the Department of Physics (D-PHYS), has been honoured with the Herschel Medal 2017. The Royal Astronomical Society (UK) has recognised his outstanding achievements in observational astrophysics.
