Public Transportation
Many newcomers to Zurich often assume they need a car. While many people do own cars, it is very easy to get around on public transportation and a car is not a necessity, unless you live in the countryside. Public transportation in Zurich, and generally in Switzerland, is very good and is usually on time. While Zurich is a small walkable city, many residents use the excellent tram and bus network to get around.
Many people purchase a Zurich Transport Network external page (ZVV) month pass, which is valid on buses, trams and boats - depending on the zone. To travel beyond Zurich, residents of Switzerland often use the Swiss National Rail (SBB). All employees at ETH Zurich working at least 50% for a term of at least 6 months are eligible for a free half-fare travel pass (Halbtaxabonnement), or a discount of 15% on an annual travel ticket (Generalabonnement) wih the Swiss National Rail (SBB).
ETH also has a bus (ETH Link) that connects the central and H?nggerberg campuses, and which is free for everyone with an ETH ID card.
Driving
Whether or not you have a vehicle in Switzerland, you may still consider converting your driver's license so that you can legally drive in Switzerland. Depending on the country from which you have a license, you would have one year after becoming a resident to convert your license. Please refer to the "driving license" tab for more information.
Please note that ETH employees can receive a discount for car rentals as well.
Parking
ETH does have a number of parking spots for the various campuses. Please take a look at the parking info page for information about permits, prices and locations.
