Machines learn to speak Swiss German
Speaking Swiss German is a challenge for many non-Swiss people. So now the machines are trying.
Voice assistants are gaining importance as a human-computer interface in our lives. Millions of people already use voice assistants to get weather or traffic updates, to listen to the news, to play music, and to control their smart home. However, none of today’s assistants speaks or understands the various dialects in Switzerland, thus making communicating with them feel unnatural. In this project, the ETH Media Technology Center partnered with SRF (Swiss Radio and Television) to build the first voice assistant that can speak several Swiss German dialects.
The Media Technology Center (MTC) was founded in 2019 as part of the ETH Media Tech Initiative. The MTC is a place where researchers and industry partners work together on projects to shape the future of media technology. The center provides a platform to work on technological innovations at the intersection of media technology, digital journalism, and design. In addition, the center provides a forum for a lively exchange between academia and industry, experts and students, innovators and established opinions. The following industry partners support this initiative:
TX Group, Ringier, SRG/SRF, NZZ Media Group, Verband Schweizer Medien
