Disciplinary affairs
Disciplinary proceedings at ETH Zurich are governed by the ETH Zurich Ordinance on Disciplinary Measures, which defines possible disciplinary offences, disciplinary measures, procedural steps and responsibilities.
The central bodies are responsible for conducting disciplinary proceedings.
- Holding unauthorised aids available for personal use or deploying said unauthorised aids during an examination
- Plagiarism: Submitting written work or solutions which were not personally authored or prepared, or passing off the work and results of other persons as one’s own (for further information on plagiarism see Scientific writing)
- Disrupting lectures or events
- Threatening, harassing, coercing or denigrating the honour of ETH Zurich members
- Forging or falsifying ETH Zurich documents
- Aiding or abetting a disciplinary offence
Disciplinary offences in the context of performance assessments
- If lecturers suspect possible improper conduct during an examination they should speak to the person in question. If said person is in possession of an unauthorised aid the lecturers should take it from them. The affected person may, however, continue with the examination.
- Afterwards the lecturers should report the case via the online form Improper conduct.
Further disciplinary offences
All further forms of disciplinary offence should be reported by .
- After the disciplinary offence has been reported, the investigator assesses it and ascertains the facts of the matter. It is important at this stage that lecturers undertake no further steps (imposition of measures, discussions with students regarding the disciplinary proceeding, etc.), in order to ensure adherence to legal procedural rules.
- The investigator requests the Rector to open disciplinary proceedings or to disregard the case.
- If disciplinary proceedings are opened, the affected person is informed immediately.
- The affected person may address the accusation in written or oral form (in the context of a fair hearing).
- If an offence of the ETH Zurich Ordinance on Disciplinary Measures is established, disciplinary measures are decreed in accordance with the severity of the offence.
- Appeals against decrees may be lodged with the ETH Appeals Commission.
