Air Travel Emissions Dashboard
The ETH Air Travel Emissions Dashboard allows users to interactively explore ETH Zurich's air travel data since 2006.
ETH Zurich has been recording its emissions from work-related air travel since 2006. The recording methodology was changed in 2016 from a simple spend-based method to a more precise recording method according to the VDR standard by ETH's external partner external page atmosfair. Since then, the data collection has been even more granular at the level of departments, institutes and professorships and with detailed information on the individual flights.
In the interest of data transparency and openness, and to promote the concepts of data sharing and open research data, the ETH Air Travel Emissions Dashboard provides insight into the data series since 2006.
The individual pages of the dashboard show the following data:
- ETH-wide emissions 2006-2022: In addition to ETH Zurich's absolute emissions from 2006 to 2022, emissions per full-time equivalent (FTE) are also shown here to ensure comparability between individual organizational units within ETH Zurich as well as between ETH and other universities.
- Top 10 destinations 2022: The ten most approached airports in 2022, starting from all Swiss airports. It should be noted that these are legs of an overall trip - that is, in the case of transfer flights, each individual leg is recorded, not the final destination. For example, if someone flies to Singapore via Amsterdam, only the leg to Amsterdam is shown in this visualization.
- Flight class 2016-2022: The absolute emissions and percentage of emissions from 2016 to 2022 divided into flight class: first class, business class, economy premium/plus class, economy class.
- Distance category 2016-2022: The absolute emissions and percentage of emissions from 2016 to 2022 divided into distance category: short-haul flight (0-1500 km), medium-haul flight (1500-4500 km) and long-haul flight (>4500 km). The calculation of the distance categories is based on individual flight legs, not the final destination.
- Passenger function 2016-2022: The absolute emissions and percentage of emissions from 2016 to 2022 divided into passenger function: Unknown (no data), Guest, Professor:in, Senior Researcher (PostDocs, Senior Assistants, Research Associates and Assistants), Doctoral Student:in, Bachelor's/Master's Students, Other (Administrative and Technical Staff).
