By-elections and re-elections to the Research Commission

The ETH Zurich Research Commission evaluates around 300 research applications each year and assumes a wide range of other evaluation and advisory mandates. It also advises the Executive Board on fundamental issues relating to research policy. Its members are appointed by the Executive Board for a four-year term, with the option of a single additional term. By-elections and re-elections were held at the end of January for various positions within the Commission.

Anthony Patt, Full Professor of Climate Policy (D-USYS), and Max Schmidt, Full Professor of Crystalline Geology (D-ERDW), did not stand for election. Both had reached the maximum possible term of office of eight years. Emo Welzl, Full Professor of Computer Science (D-INFK), also no longer stood for re-election due to his imminent retirement.

To replace the three departing members, the Executive Board has elected to the Commission:

  • Timothy Roscoe, Full Professor of Computer Science (D-INFK)
  • Tobias Schmidt, Associate Professor of Energy and Technology Policy (D-GESS)
  • Derek Vance, Full Professor of Geochemistry (D-ERDW)

The following existing members were re-elected for a second term of office:

  • Ulrik Brandes, Full Professor of Social Networks (D-GESS)
  • Robert Flatt, Full Professor of Physical Chemistry of Building Materials (D-BAUG)

The Executive Board thanks the retiring members for their commitment and wishes the new and re-elected members every success in their role on the Research Commission.

By-elections to the Prize Commission

There were also by-elections for two existing members of the Prize Commission:

  • Annette Gigon, Full Professor of Architecture and Construction (D-ARCH), is no longer standing for office as a member of the Commission due to her imminent retirement.
  • Peter Bühlmann, Full Professor of Mathematics (D-MATH), is retiring from the Prize Commission due to additional new responsibilities in research and teaching and the workload entailed.

To replace the two departing members, the Executive Board has elected:

  • Elli Mosayebi, Full Professor of Architecture and Design (D-ARCH)
  • Patrick Cheridito, Full Professor of Actuarial Mathematics (D-MATH)

The Executive Board thanks Annette Gigon and Peter Bühlmann for their collaboration on the Commission and wishes Elli Mosayebi and Patrick Cheridito every success in their new role.

The Prize Commission advises the Executive Board on science prizes, evaluates nominations for internal ETH science prizes and recommends candidates for nomination for national and international science prizes. Its members are elected for four years by the Executive Board and may stand for a second term.
