Do you know how rocking beds can improve the quality of sleep? Would you like to see how modern imaging can provide insights into the heart and brain? Are you curious about how microrobots can administer medication? Or would you like to find out how medically relevant human tissue can be produced using so-called biofabrication?
If your curiosity is piqued, visit the new GLC research and laboratory building in Gloriarank on the Zentrum campus on Thursday, 6 June 2024 from 4.30 pm. On this day, the researchers working at the GLC will give you an insight into current topics in health sciences and biomedical research. On a total of four thematic LabTours, you will learn from the researchers about the latest developments and receive answers to the previously mentioned questions. In addition to ETH members, the neighbourhoods around the GLC and the interested public are also very welcome.
Learn, play, and try new things for young and old
What will students, researchers and employees of ETH Zurich find at the public GLC visit event? In addition to the LabTours and the architectural tour (starting at 5.15 p.m. and 6.30 p.m.), further attractions and scientainment offers for adults, families and children await in the foyer. Simple medical techniques can be experienced: For example, visitors can use UV light to test whether their hands are thoroughly cleaned or use a mobile ultrasound device to look inside the body.
Visitors will also encounter autonomous robot dogs that can safely guide blind people (see external page video). The programme includes games such as the external page Magic Cube, in which children and young people (aged 10 years and older) solve tasks in pairs related to microscopes and heartbeats, or Morph Tales, an interactive game for young people and families, in which players train an AI character to perform challenging tasks reliably - for example, smart farming, developing new drugs, autonomous sailing or finding samples of extraterrestrial life.
Secrets of glass block architecture
With its special hillside location on the Zürichberg and the arched segmental slope stabilisation, the architecture of the building offers some fascinating views: The glass and steel fa?ades, for example, are modelled on the glass block fa?ades of earlier industrial and university buildings. In the foyer, a mighty, double-flight main staircase leads to the upper floors to the professorships. The new building forms an ensemble with the existing ETH buildings (ETZ, Paul Scherrer Auditorium). The architects from Boltshauser Architekten personally explain the structure of the award-winning building.
Catering options are available in the Archimedes restaurant.
The new GLC building offers space for 16 research groups from the Departments of Health Sciences and Technology (D-HEST) and Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (D-ITET), a technology platform from ETH Zurich for clinical trials (Digital Trial Intervention Platform) and rooms for teaching, including the Skills Lab, where medical students do develop basic practical skills.
