ETH+ / Open ETH
L'ETH+ è un programma lanciato dalla Direzione della scuola dell'ETH di Zurigo nel 2017. Il suo obiettivo è garantire che l'ETH di Zurigo mantenga la sua posizione di leader anche in futuro e utilizzi le riserve esistenti e costruisca capacità aggiuntive per perseguire nuovi percorsi non convenzionali nella ricerca, nell'insegnamento e nel trasferimento del sapere e delle tecnologie. Nel 2019 il programma è stato rinominato Open ETH.
Il portafoglio attuale comprende le seguenti iniziative.
L'obiettivo di questa iniziativa è che l'ETH di Zurigo assuma un ruolo di primo piano in un tema fondamentale del nostro tempo: La sicurezza delle informazioni e la protezione dei dati. La società ha grandi aspettative e chiede di trovare soluzioni a problemi urgenti in questi settori. L'ETH di Zurigo è predestinato a soddisfare queste aspettative.
A tal fine, saranno create nuove cattedre nei settori della sicurezza informatica, della crittografia e della sicurezza del software e sarà lanciato un programma di formazione congiunto con l'EPF di Losanna.

L'obiettivo di questa iniziativa è la ricerca degli effetti della trasformazione digitale sulla società. Un approccio interdisciplinare alla ricerca, all'insegnamento e al trasferimento del sapere è ideale per questo scopo: L'informatica, le discipline umanistiche e le scienze sociali dovrebbero avvicinarsi. Uno dei temi principali è la sicurezza, ad esempio la sicurezza del processo decisionale collettivo nello spazio digitale (e-democracy).
A tal fine, saranno create nuove cattedre nelle aree Sicurezza e società e Scienza dei dati e società. Inoltre, sarà istituito un punto di contatto per le persone interessate e per le parti coinvolte della politica, dell'amministrazione, delle forze armate e delle aziende.

Molti Paesi che soffrono di estrema povertà si stanno tuttavia sviluppando in modo estremamente dinamico. Le innovazioni tecnologiche, adattate alle esigenze della popolazione locale, hanno un grande potenziale per combattere la povertà in modo sostenibile. Le soluzioni sostenibili richiedono una combinazione di scienze naturali, ingegneria e scienze sociali, nonché lo scambio di conoscenze ingegneristiche e scientifiche e di personale docente, ad esempio con le università africane.

L'obiettivo di questa iniziativa è quello di trasformare l'ETH di Zurigo nel centro leader mondiale per la ricerca sulle scienze dell'apprendimento. Si tratta di un'iniziativa che coinvolge un totale di 23 cattedre di 9 dipartimenti. La ricerca sull'apprendimento e la sua maggiore comprensione dovrebbero contribuire all'ulteriore sviluppo del sistema universitario. Inoltre, i risultati dovrebbero confluire rapidamente nella pratica. L'attenzione si concentra, tra l'altro, sulle seguenti aree: Apprendimento e tecnologia, Sociologia dell'educazione, Antropologia della scienza.

L'ETH di Zurigo diventerà un leader mondiale nella sintesi dei materiali. L'attenzione sarà rivolta alla ricerca, all'istruzione e alle infrastrutture. I materiali innovativi sono fondamentali per le scoperte fondamentali in scienze fisiche, chimiche e dei materiali e per applicazioni che vanno dalla tecnologia dell'informazione e dei sensori alla biologia e alla medicina. ? prevista un'infrastruttura di prim'ordine per la crescita di cristalli ad alta temperatura e per la sintesi di materiali complessi con nuove proprietà, di grande interesse anche per l'industria svizzera.

Questa iniziativa mira a realizzare una rivoluzione tecnologica nella terapia cardiovascolare. Il legame tra l'ETH e le cliniche deve essere rafforzato. Zurich Heart ha affermato con successo l'ETH di Zurigo nel settore della medicina cardiaca.
Obiettivi concreti:
- Rafforzamento della ricerca clinica nel campo della medicina cardiaca
- Sviluppo di sistemi innovativi per il supporto circolatorio
- Utilizzare l'automazione e la scienza dei dati per migliorare la diagnosi e la terapia
- Implementazione nel programma di laurea in medicina

Questa iniziativa mira a colmare il divario tra robotica e scienza dei materiali e a sviluppare materiali intelligenti. Nella robotica, le sfide per i materiali sono immense, soprattutto nell'area delle interazioni uomo-robot come la riabilitazione, gli esoscheletri e gli indossabili. Tuttavia, non sono ancora stati sviluppati materiali adeguati. L'ETH di Zurigo ha grandi opportunità in questo campo. Il Politecnico di Zurigo ha già deciso di sviluppare competenze sia nella robotica che nella scienza ed ingegneria dei materiali. Una nuova cattedra deve combinare entrambe le aree e fornire risultati e soluzioni promettenti.

L'obiettivo di questa iniziativa è quello di fare dell'ETH di Zurigo il principale polo mondiale della robotica. A tal fine, è prevista la creazione di una nuova piattaforma di ricerca, istruzione e formazione per le numerose competenze robotiche esistenti presso l'ETH di Zurigo. In totale sono coinvolti otto dipartimenti. Questa iniziativa non porterà solo investimenti nei settori della ricerca e dell'infrastruttura, ma anche nuove offerte formative.

L'obiettivo di questa iniziativa è riorientare la ricerca fondamentale e gli studi sulla scienza dei dati. Le nuove possibilità tecnologiche e le nuove applicazioni stanno cambiando radicalmente le esigenze della scienza dei dati. Ne consegue un adattamento della ricerca fondamentale e quindi anche dei corsi di studio. Le competenze dell'ETH di Zurigo saranno riunite in un unico centro: Ciò rafforzerà la scienza dei dati in diversi dipartimenti.

I materiali viventi diventeranno sempre più importanti in futuro. Tuttavia, molte domande rimangono in apertura, come ad esempio come le proprietà dei materiali e le proprietà intracellulari influenzino la funzionalità o la plasticità delle cellule. Chimici, fisici, scienziati dei materiali e biologi dell'ETH di Zurigo vogliono collaborare ancora più strettamente per formare una rete di esperti e sviluppare nuovi materiali biologici. A questo scopo verrà creata una nuova cattedra aggiuntiva.

Se in futuro si vuole costruire in modo più sostenibile, sono necessari nuovi strumenti di progettazione e metodi di calcolo digitali. Questa iniziativa interdisciplinare mira a far progredire significativamente i processi di progettazione in architettura e in edilizia con l'aiuto dell'apprendimento automatico, dell'intelligenza artificiale e della realtà virtuale. Verrà creato un nuovo laboratorio per la realtà immersiva e la visualizzazione dei dati, che permetterà ai ricercatori di interagire direttamente con l'ambiente virtuale e di sperimentare l'acustica degli edifici. L'area sarà ulteriormente rafforzata dalla creazione di una nuova cattedra di "Augmented Computational Design".

Il centro in progetto raggrupperà e rafforzerà la ricerca quantistica nell'ambito dell'ingegneria e delle scienze naturali presso l'ETH e l'Istituto Paul Scherrer (PSI) a livello nazionale. L'obiettivo è quello di creare la prossima generazione di tecnologie quantistiche e di sfruttarle come opportunità per la Svizzera. Il nuovo centro dell'ETH creerà anche una visibilità internazionale che va oltre il riconoscimento di singoli ricercatori di spicco. ? prevista anche una cattedra congiunta con il PSI per la "Tecnologia quantistica sperimentale" e una cattedra per l'"Informazione quantistica" presso il Dipartimento di informatica.

EXCLAIM sta sviluppando una piattaforma di calcolo e dati exascale per la modellazione meteorologica e climatica, in grado di simulare il sistema regionale e globale atmosfera-mare-ghiaccio-atmosfera-terra a una risoluzione molto più elevata di quanto fosse possibile in precedenza. Questo salto di risoluzione consentirà di modellare in modo esplicito molti processi meteorologici e climatici critici, in particolare le nubi e la convezione, riducendo così le incertezze nelle previsioni meteorologiche e nelle proiezioni climatiche.

Una parte sostanziale del finanziamento di ETH+ / Open ETH è fornita dalla Direzione della scuola, un'altra parte dalle cattedre e dai dipartimenti partecipanti. L'obiettivo è raccogliere importi significativi da terzi attraverso le iniziative.
Oltre al mondo accademico, anche le unità non accademiche dell'ETH di Zurigo sono espressamente invitate a contribuire con idee e a sfruttare le opportunità offerte da ETH+ / Open ETH.
