Internal job change
Have you been working at ETH for a number of years and would like to pursue further professional development or change the direction of your career? Would you like to assume a new role and to develop new competencies while continuing to apply them within ETH?
ETH Zurich supports all employees in their professional development encouraging internal job changes.
What is an internal job change?
Internal job changes are transfers of employees within ETH Zurich to a new function. These are usually changes within administrative or technical functions. In exceptional cases, such changes also happen from a scientific function.
Vacant positions are advertised internally and/or externally. For temporary assignments, such as projects or deputisations (maternity leave, longer absences, etc.), it is possible to advertise the position internally only.
Importance of professional development
The continuous development and maintenance of the employability of our employees is of great importance to ETH Zurich. In times of rapid technological change, we promote self-responsible lifelong learning and support our employees in keeping up to date with the latest developments in their work.
Professional development at ETH Zurich typically happens in the current function, e.g. through new projects or extended, more demanding tasks. Another form of professional development is through internal changes. In both cases, learning from experience "on the job" and taking advantage of learning opportunities are essential. We would like to point out that horizontal or vertical professional development may be limited in certain functions. This is for reasons that lie in the function itself or in the organisation.
We recommend addressing professional development in the annual appraisal interview with the line manager or discussing it in a separate development meeting. Record the next steps in order to approach professional development in a more binding manner.
ETH Zurich supports self-responsible learning and development in a variety of ways:
Internal application process
Before filing an internal application, you should clarify your current professional situation and opportunities for further development. Define your expectations regarding an internal job change. Prepare your documents just as diligently and completely as you would for an external application.
Your application will be carefully reviewed and interviews will be conducted confidentially. All applicants receive feedback.
References are always obtained in consultation with you and treated confidentially.
In the event of an internal transfer, the statutory notice periods in accordance with the external page Personnel Ordinance (PVO) of the ETH Domain (in German) apply. A shorter notice period is possible if the current and the new line manager agree.
