Internal job change
In a nutshell: What's it all about?
When an employee changes function and area of responsibility within the university, they must be prepared for their new role. At the same time, any opportunities created by the new appointment should be explored.
ETH encourages internal mobility, as it creates numerous opportunities.
In your role as manager you can:
- utilise the strengths and abilities of your new team member effectively, helping your team to progress further
- increase staff satisfaction;
- strengthen staff loyalty towards ETH through career opportunities within the university;
- help staff gain a deeper understanding of ETH business processes and culture;
- preserve know-how in the university.
At the same time, employees can:
- develop their skills and knowledge;
- advance their careers and qualify for higher functions or management duties, which in turn motivates them and encourages them
- perform well, thus benefiting the entire team.
- Support your employees according to their potential to help them take on a new role.
- Involve HR in a possible change of function at an early stage.
- If a job change is imminent in your team, prepare your team member well for their new role: for example by providing the necessary training and professional development.
- Liaise with the person who is changing to ensure a well-planned, smooth handover
- Issue an interim reference and draft a new job description.
- Organise an appreciative farewell for the new employee.
- If new employees join your team, communicate clearly what you expect and what objectives you have set for them.
- Actively contribute to a positive atmosphere so your new team member feels comfortable and motivated to succeed in their new role.
Self-reflection: Am I applying my social and leadership competencies effectively?
Acting responsibly:
- How do I ensure all employees develop and recognise development opportunities?
- Have I given the person changing jobs sufficient support during the transition process?
- Has the new position met the employee's expectations?
- Can they make the best possible use of their personal skills?
